Cross Country Running Courses
In Cross Country in California on the high school level, all race courses for every meet are a certified 3-miles or 5000 meters (3.1 miles) long. Every athlete, no matter what Division they are competing in will run the same course for each meet we participate in. The courses will vary in terrain depending on where we are. Most courses are a combination of dirt, grass, and hard surface and are at a park or a high school. Athletes must wear running shoes on these courses (they can be racing shoes with no spikes).
Parents and friends are greatly encouraged to come out and support our athletes. Most courses are viewer-friendly and there is no entry fee to most races. Bring cameras, a loud rooting voice and a great deal of enthusiasm.
We always set up a “camp” for our athletes to stow their gear and relax before their races. We have two beautiful blue and red shade protectors that are very visible and parents are welcome to join us at the camp. We will need some parents to help us guard this area when the athletes are competing so that gear and valuables do not disappear.
Each athlete will only run in one division race each week. Again athletes will compete at levels assigned by the coaches. Remember that our goal is to meet the team needs first while giving each athlete the opportunity to personally develop and have fun. The athletes need to listen to the coaches and have faith in their ability to do what is best for the team and the athlete.
